There were two versions of Netscape Navigator 3.0; the Standard Edition and the Gold Edition. The latter consisted of the Navigator browser with e-mail, news readers, and a WYSIWYG web page compositor. The extra functions enlarged and slowed the software, rendering it prone to crashing. Netscape CEO Jim Barksdale insisted on the name change because Communicator was a general-purpose client application, which contained the Navigator browser. Netscape Communicator, renamed, was the version published as Netscape Communicator, in version 4.0; the name change diluted its name-recognition and confused users.
