Released on Apple's 10th anniversary, only the first 10,000 have
the "Woz" limited signature on the front (Steve Wozniak, a co-founder
of Apple, was the original designer of the Apple I and II computers).
The IIGS was Apple's quick answer to the Amiga and ST, adding
much better sound and graphics support to the Apple II line. It runs
most older Apple II software and was the first Apple computer to
introduce the Apple Desktop Bus technology (used later in the
Macintosh line) that allows the keyboard to be connected to the
computer, and the mouse to be connected through the keyboard.
With 64KB of dedicated sound RAM, the IIGS
could play 15 simultaneous sounds. Although the Macintosh had already been released by the time the IIGS came out, it does have the distinction of being the first color graphical interface that Apple ever released, and easily supported both 5.25" disks and 3.5". The IIGS was a machine caught between worlds and ultimately was put to rest in 1992.
